If you have been sexually assaulted...

First, get to a safe place. Then contact someone you trust and who can help you, such as the police, a friend, or your local sexual assault agency. Our VOICE advocates are available to speak with you, and/or meet you at a hospital emergency department or police station, 24 hours a day.

Do not shower, bathe, douche, drink or eat, smoke, or change clothes.

Consider the following:

Medical Help

Our VOICE strongly recommends that every victim of sexual assault receive immediate medical attention. A specific sexual assault examination addresses your medical needs, as well as the collection of forensic evidence that may be useful should you decide to report the crime and press charges. You are under no obligation to prosecute even if you have the evidence collection kit done. Medical evidence can be collected up to 72 hours after an assault.

The Police

Sexual assault is a crime. However, it is your decision whether or not to file a police report. If you decide to report the assault, the report should be filed with the law enforcement agency in the city/county where the assault occurred. An advocate can meet you at the police station to provide support.

Our VOICE, Inc. is the sexual assault center for Buncombe County in North Carolina. The office is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Thursday, 9:00am to 3:00pm on Fridays, and has advocates available to help you 24 hours a day.

COUNSELING SERVICES / CASE MANAGEMENT

Our VOICE offers individual counseling sessions for all people who have experienced the trauma of sexual violence, including those persons indirectly affected, such as family and friends.

All counseling services are free of charge. At Our VOICE, we believe that people should not have to pay for being the victim of a crime, and all of our counseling opportunities are completely confidential. We are dedicated to providing a safe, accessible environment for healing.

In addition to individual counseling, Our VOICE offers several group counseling opportunities. Please contact the agency during office hours for updated information on support groups at (828) 252-0562.
