Featured Artist: Sarah Watkins

Sarah Watkins is a representational artist with a focus on painting and sculpture. Born and raised in Hyde Park, New York,  Sarah had three passions in life: music, animals and art.  Any found object in her house was always part of a “future masterpiece,” so she felt. She taught herself to paint at a young age, with a little help from Bob Ross.

Sarah later went on to study Fine Arts at the University of New Paltz, NY.  Her focus was primarily painting and sculpture, with minors in Art History and Art Education.  During this same time she took a position working with teenagers living with autism and developmental differences. Getting to know their history, she learned that many were the victims of abuse, whether it be verbal, emotional, physical, sexual, and in some cases, abandonment  from their family.  Using art as a way for them to express their emotions gave them an outlet to be heard, to be seen, to be understood. In return it offered them some inner peace, and a chance to look at what they had created and be proud.

” We all have a desire to be seen, to be heard, and to be understood. We want to feel valued as human beings, but we also want to add value to those around us. This is what contributes toward our sense of fulfillment and purpose. That is why I paint. It is my voice, my expression, my contribution and my inspiration. ”  -Sarah
