Our VOICE is able to provide crisis intervention services to survivors of sexual assault around the clock on our 24-hour crisis line and in the hospital thanks to our dedicated volunteers! We are pleased to announce that once a month we’ll be highlighting one of our wonderful volunteers here on our website!
Volunteer Highlight: James Theophilos
We asked James to respond to some questions so that we could learn what helps keep their passion for Our VOICE a strong one.
James moved to Asheville around nine months ago after finishing up a Master’s program in Film, Video, critical media studies. James has been involved in transformative justice work since they were a teenager, predominately working around LGBTQ issues. Since moving to Asheville, James has been a freelance videographer/video editor, playing a lot of music, organizing a film summer camp for girls and gender minorities called Fierce Flix, and being a member of the radical community based cooperative space, Firestorm Books and Coffee. James hopes to continuously be involved with community organizing, media production, especially with LGBTQ youth, as well as survivors.
What inspires you to volunteer?
I feel inspired to volunteer with Our Voice because the pursuit of helping others (especially survivors, sex workers, and other minorities) overcome the many faces of oppression and violence in this world is utterly important to me. It is something that I hope to continue doing for the rest of my life.
What has been your most meaningful volunteer experience?
What motivates you to keep volunteering?
What advice do you have for new volunteers?
Read radical feminist authors who write on topics surrounding sexual violence to give yourself a broader more systemic understanding of sexual oppression and its intersections with race, sexuality, disability and class. If anything- reading these writings will ignite an even larger flame in your heart to continue doing this form of work! on April 7 and I’m really excited about that.
What do you do to maintain self-care?
Taking baths, processing with friends, cuddling with my dog, gardening, playing music, reading, sleeping
