Prevention, Education & Outreach Volunteers

Our VOICE’s Education & Outreach Programs are aimed at breaking down myths, challenging harmful attitudes, advocating for healthy relationships and consent, and sharing resources.  We offer presentations in the following settings:

  • schools (middle and high)
  • support groups
  • professional settings
  • assisted living residences
  • shelters
  • treatment centers
  • faith-based institutions
  • after-school programs

Volunteering in this program is an exciting way to affect change on the topic of sexual violence in our county.  While contributing to an important local effort, volunteers gain knowledge, improve their public-speaking and facilitation skills, and get to meet new groups of people throughout the county.

The PEO volunteer program seeks to empower young people in developing school and social cultures of safety and respect. As a PEO volunteer, you will help teens recognize the impact of sexual violence and identify harmful attitudes and beliefs that contribute to cultures of violence. You will guide them in developing skills to improve communication, recognize risky situations, and intervene to stop violence.

The PEO training (21 hours + 2 shadow sessions) will prepare you to facilitate programs for teenagers as part of our commitment to reach many eighth grade classes and every ninth grade health class in Buncombe County. You may have the opportunity to present in other settings, such as shelters, treatment centers, assisted living facilities, faith-based institutions and after-school groups. As part of your role in the PEO program, you will also reach out to new groups to offer them brief information sessions about Our VOICE services and programs.

Trained PEO volunteers commit 4-6 hours a month, including 2 high school presentations and 2 self-initiated outreach efforts. The training is offered at no charge to participants who fulfill their volunteer requirement.

Upcoming Education & Outreach Training Dates: TBA
