Volunteer Advocate Training *CRASH COURSE*

Training sessions are held on Friday evening and all day Saturday over two weekends at the Our VOICE office.

Fall Volunteer Advocate Training

Training sessions are held on Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 pm at the Our VOICE office.

Thursdays between September 12th – October 24th

Qualifications of an Advocate:

  • Understanding of sexual violence
  • Ability and willingness to listen and communicate with survivors of sexual violence
  • Evidence of good judgment in everyday relations with others
  • Ability to show concern and empathy for survivors<
  • Reliability and responsibility
  • Ability to manage emotions and reactions to survivors’ stories
  • Patience with self and others in difficult situations
  • Ability to work with diverse populations

What Our VOICE Crisis Response Advocates Do:

What Our VOICE Crisis Line Advocates Do:

Take crisis line calls during your assigned shift.

  • Assist callers in crisis
  • Go to the hospital with survivors after a sexual assault (in volunteer teams of 2)
  • Provide client with appropriate referrals to Our VOICE services or other community agencies
  • Provide to all victims of sexual assault information regarding options and procedures
  • Know how to take emotional care of self and ask for help when needed
  • Give options, not answers or advice = client empowerment

On Call Shifts: minimum 2 shifts each month

  • Volunteers are scheduled each month based on their self-reported availability
  • Shifts are weekdays 5pm-8am the next morning and weekends 8 am to 8 am the next morning.
  • Respond to on-call calendar scheduling requests by 20th of each month
  • Responsible for finding coverage if not able to cover shift

Attend Continuing Education Meetings at least 4 times a year

  • Trainings offered once a month
  • Mandatory attendance for minimum of 4 out of 12 meetings
  • Learn new policies, laws and current issues
  • Guest presenters on special topics
  • Share concerns and case examples with other advocates
  • Feel connected to the community of Our VOICE Advocates

Report Client Contacts

  • All calls and hospital accompaniments must be reported no later than 9 am the next business day
  • Reports are submitted online
