Backpacking Brothers

Now Accepting Applications!

Backpacking Brothers is an innovative, 4-day outdoor program that takes place in the beautiful Pisgah National Forest. In the program, students spend 3 nights at base-camp and 1 overnight on a backpacking trip. This program is offered to middle-school boys aged 11-14. Throughout the week, attendees participate in outdoor activities, building connection with their other Backpacking Brothers, and pushing themselves to new heights!

This program was born out of an identified need to engage young men in shifting attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors around sexual violence. Our VOICE has been carrying out prevention education programming for over a decade, including Climbing Toward Confidence a 10-week afterschool rock climbing program for middle school girls. Backpacking Brothers is a complementary program to Climbing Toward Confidence. Backpacking Brothers uses innovative teaching methods and experiential education to discuss healthy relationships, boundary setting, and consent.

The aim of both these programs is to build self-confidence, dismantle gender stereotypes, and empower young people to take ownership of their bodies and their identities in an outdoor setting.

This year’s program dates will be:

August 14-18, 2017
