Pop culture shapes the way we think about relationships. From the shows we binge to the movies we quote with friends, the stories we consume often influence how we understand love, boundaries, communication, and power.
That’s why we are excited to introduce a new blog series from Our Voice: Reel Relationships.
In this series, we will explore popular TV shows and films through a trauma-informed lens. Rather than simply reviewing the entertainment value of these stories, we will look more closely at what they reveal about relationships, consent, power dynamics, and social expectations.
Many shows include both positive and harmful examples of how people treat one another. By examining these moments, we can better understand what healthy relationships can look like and recognize behaviors that may be harmful or manipulative. We will also explore how factors like power, social norms, and identity influence the choices characters make and the relationships they form.
Our goal is not to criticize the media we enjoy, but to encourage thoughtful viewing. Stories can be powerful tools for learning, reflection, and conversation.
Through Reel Relationships, we hope to create space for readers to think more critically about the media they consume while still enjoying the stories they love.
Stay tuned for our first installment, where we take a closer look at Bridgerton and explore how the series portrays social norms, consent, power dynamics, and communication in relationships.
