Bystander Intervention for Youth
Program Overview
Bystander Intervention is a prevention education training designed to empower youth to recognize potentially harmful situations and take action before harm occurs. The program focuses on building awareness, confidence, and practical skills that help young people support one another and create safer peer environments.
Young people are often the first to notice concerning behavior among friends, classmates, or peers. Bystander Intervention helps youth understand their role in prevention and provides tools to intervene in ways that prioritize safety and respect. The training is grounded in trauma informed and prevention focused principles and emphasizes choice, care, and shared responsibility.
Bystander Intervention was developed by Our Voice to support youth in becoming active participants in creating safer schools and communities.

Why This Training Matters
Many incidents of harassment and harm occur in the presence of peers. Without tools or guidance, young people may feel unsure about what to do or fear making the situation worse.
Bystander Intervention helps youth move from passive observation to active care. When young people understand how to intervene safely, harmful behavior is more likely to be interrupted and peers are more likely to feel supported.
This training supports prevention by strengthening peer accountability and fostering safer school cultures.
How the Training Works
Bystander Intervention is delivered as an interactive, discussion based training designed to engage youth and encourage participation. The session balances education with opportunities to practice decision making and problem solving.
Training elements include facilitated discussion, scenario exploration, group activities, and reflection. The training can be delivered virtually or in person and adapted to different time frames and group sizes.
