Serving Teen Survivors of Sexual Violence for Caregivers

Program Overview

Serving Teen Survivors of Sexual Violence is a training designed for adults who work with or care for teens who have experienced sexual violence. The program focuses on understanding how trauma impacts adolescents and how to respond in ways that prioritize safety, choice, and empowerment.

This training recognizes that teens experience trauma differently than adults and that well intentioned responses can sometimes cause harm if they are not trauma informed. Participants gain practical guidance on how to support teen survivors while respecting autonomy, building trust, and reducing the risk of re traumatization.

Serving Teen Survivors of Sexual Violence is grounded in trauma informed, survivor centered principles and emphasizes an intersectional approach to supporting youth.

Who This Training Is For

This training is designed for educators, caregivers, youth workers, nonprofit staff, service providers, and professionals who work directly with teens.

It is especially relevant for individuals who may receive disclosures from teens or who are responsible for supporting teens in educational, medical, or community based settings.

What the Training Covers

Serving Teen Survivors of Sexual Violence provides education on sexual violence affecting adolescents and practical strategies for responding appropriately and effectively.

Participants learn about:

  • What sexual violence and sexual abuse look like among teens

  • Why teens are at increased risk for sexual violence

  • How trauma affects adolescent development

  • Common trauma responses in teens

  • Recognizing signs and symptoms of sexual abuse

  • Power and control dynamics specific to teen relationships

  • The Teen Power and Control Wheel

  • How to respond to disclosures in trauma informed ways

  • How to support teen survivors without taking away autonomy

  • How to connect teens to appropriate resources

The training also addresses the intersectional impacts of sexual violence, including how race, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and age can affect both risk and access to support.

Why This Training Matters

Adolescents experience some of the highest rates of sexual violence, yet many adults feel unprepared to respond when a teen discloses harm. Fear of saying the wrong thing or taking the wrong action can create barriers to support.

When adults understand trauma informed approaches, teens are more likely to feel believed, supported, and safe. Appropriate responses can reduce long term harm and help teens begin the healing process.

This training equips caregivers and professionals with the knowledge and confidence to respond in ways that center teen voices and promote safety and well being.

How the Training Works

Serving Teen Survivors of Sexual Violence is delivered as an interactive, one hour workshop. The training combines education, discussion, and practical guidance to support real world application.

Training elements include facilitated discussion, scenario exploration, and opportunities for questions. The session is designed to be informative, supportive, and accessible.

The training can be delivered virtually or in person and can be adapted to different settings and audiences.

  • Recognize trauma responses and signs of abuse

  • Feel more confident responding to disclosures

  • Learn how to support teens without removing choice or control
